Cooperation of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace with the Tangoaires group of FEX for the Mental Health Week
tango & embrace
... because an embrace can save you a whole bunch of words...
1st mental health week programme in xanthi public health & social care directorate
The 1st Mental Health Week organized by the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace aimed to raise awareness on important mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and the impact of mental health on children and adolescents. A special moment of the events was the participation of the Tangoaires group of the Philoprodis Union of Xanthi (FEX), which presented an experiential workshop entitled “The Embrace of Tango”.
The healing power of the embrace in Tango
The workshop under the guidance of Panagiota Skarlatos and Konstantinos Vavatsikos focused on the concept of embrace in tango. The embrace in tango “is affectionate, effortless, safe” and is the medium through which a silent, emotion-filled dialogue between the two dancers begins. This communication, mediated by movement and music, offers a sense of safety and release, creating a brief but profound “journey” of emotional relief and communication.
The Role of Art in Mental Health
The participation of the Tangoaires group highlighted the crucial importance of art and physical expression in improving mental health, making tango a vehicle for personal expression and inner peace.
Through the dynamics of embracing, the audience was able to experience the beneficial effects of movement, proximity and dialogue without words, enhancing awareness and understanding of mental well-being.
This activity demonstrated that mental health and art can work together, empowering audiences to recognize and manage their inner needs through healing experiences.
