Cooperation of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace with the Tangoaires group of FEX for the Mental Health Week

tango & hug

…because a hug can save you from a thousand words...

1st mental health week programme in xanthi public health & social care directorate

Tango & Hug is a social and cultural action developed within the Tango Action initiatives and took place as part of the 1st Mental Health Week, organized by the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.

The Mental Health Week aimed to raise public awareness around critical mental health issues, including:

  • depression

  • anxiety

  • eating disorders

  • the impact of mental health on children and adolescents

Within this framework, the participation of the TangoAires team of the Ρrogessive Union of Xanthi (FEX) stood out as one of the most experiential and emotionally resonant moments of the program.

Tango & Hug: the healing power of embrace in tango

The experiential workshop entitled “The Embrace in Tango”, led by Panagiota Skarlatou and Konstantinos Vavatsikos, focused on the concept of the embrace as the foundation of communication in Argentine Tango.

In tango, the embrace is:

  • gentle

  • unforced

  • safe

It is the space where a silent yet deeply emotional dialogue begins between two dancers.
A dialogue shaped not by words, but by sensation, movement, and music.

Through this embodied communication, participants experienced a short yet profound journey of emotional release, connection, and inner relief.

The role of art in mental health

The participation of the TangoAires team highlighted the essential role of art and embodied expression in supporting mental well-being.

Here, tango emerges as:

  • a vehicle for personal expression

  • a practice of inner calm and grounding

  • a form of embodied awareness

Through the dynamics of the embrace, the audience was able to experience the positive effects of:

  • movement

  • physical closeness

  • dialogue without words

enhancing understanding of mental well-being not as an abstract concept, but as lived experience.

This philosophy is cultivated consistently through the Argentine Tango classes of the TangoAires team, where connection, listening, and embodied awareness form the core of the learning process.

Tango Action as a social act of care

Tango & Hug reflects the core philosophy of Tango Action: using tango as a tool for care, connection, and human presence.

In a world where words often fall short, a hug can become a refuge, a bridge between people, and a reminder that mental health begins with human connection.

The experience of tango as a social dance continues beyond workshops, through the milongas and cultural events organized by TangoAires, creating open spaces for encounter, expression, and human connection.
